Study Abroad in Tuscany, Italy: Summer, 2016
Prof. Tom Paradis, Associate Provost and Professor in the Dept. of History and Anthropology invites Butler students from all majors to earn 3 credits on this month-long interdisciplinary program, June 5 – July 6, 2016. Students and faculty will live in the medieval walled city of Siena, Italy. Siena is most famous for its incomparable festival and maddening horse race called the Palio, which serves as a highlight of this program.
Students interested in one or more of the following academic topics should consider applying: community viability and urban livability, walkable and transit-oriented cities, Medieval and Renaissance history and development, influences of globalization and mass tourism, local-outsider social dynamics, public spaces and urban design, architectural history, and especially gaining confidence with foreign travel and living abroad. Students can also devise their own research projects aligned more directly with their own interests. Excursions include a 3-day trip to Venice, and single-day trips to Florence, San Gimignano, and Pienza – the birthplace of Renaissance urban planning.
Prof. Paradis is bringing the Siena program to Butler after leading a similar one from Northern Arizona University during the past three summers (see links below for highlights). Paradis is also the author of Living the Palio: A Story of Community and Public Life in Siena, Italy (2014) based on his experiences with this very program in its first two summers (complimentary copies will be provided).
Program cost: $4,414 (seven enrolled students), or $4,096 (with ten students enrolled). This price includes airfare, apartment lodging, planned excursions, all instruction, events, and select entrance fees and community (contrada) dinners.
